Dancing in the Rain

One of our favorite quotes is...

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about dancing in the rain."

In other words, I can't just wait around until everything is nice and easy to create the life I want for myself; instead, I need to be able to make the most of what's happening around me and work through to the other side (I mean "dance" through to the other side!).

I'm working on this today. My "rain" came in the form of a Facebook direct message from my employee at my old job. She was in the midst of the storm (work), while I'm relaxing on vacation. She let me know that things were only getting worse at work. After reading that message, it has been taking great effort to redirect my thoughts toward what I want, rather than focusing on what I don't want.

Here's the technique I'm using: each time I begin thinking about what I don't like at my new job, I make a conscious effort to simply begin thinking about what I DO want in my new job...the quality of people I work with, the feeling I have throughout - and at the end of - a work day, and the FUN this job brings into my life.

Let it rain - I'm busy dancing!

Thought Management

I've come to the conclusion that inner thought management is a lot like changing any habit...kind of like dieting or quitting smoking. It takes vigilance and motivation, and lots of thought management.

Since I have dieted before, I'll use that analogy. In order to diet successfully, I must change some old habits - modify my food, add exercise to my routine. AND, constantly remind myself of the desired outcome. The hardest part of this is changing the old habits.

With dieting, those "old" foods are so tempting and comforting. The "old" process of lazing the evening away on the sofa without any exercise is easier than getting dressed to go to the gym.

Similarly, when creating a new vision for oneself, instead of food and the gym, we're dealing with "old" thoughts. These must be constantly managed and directed. The "old" ones come naturally; the "new" ones must be written down, remembered often, and purposely focused on. Until they too become a habit.

So, today's task is to manage my thoughts throughout the day, redirecting them to what I WANT in my New Job whenever needed. I'm on a mind diet.

Believe: My New Job

So, I worked on the Ask phase for several weeks, perfecting my image of My New Job, and describing all the important details I could think of.

The next step in the process is Believe.

This is an interesting step. At first, I began to think that I had to get busy and make the Ask phase happen myself. So, I began to look for jobs online - something that just turns my stomach. One of the things I learned while watching "The Secret" is that whatever I'm doing to move toward my goal should feel good. Since online job searching definitely didn't feel good, I decided to re-watch the video to get clarification on the Believe stage.

In watching the movie again, I learned that the universe will work on making this happen for me. My job is to keep my thoughts focused on what I WANT in my life, and to stay open to receiving it in whatever form the universe brings it to me - through another person, through a job posting I happen upon, or who knows!? For do-it-yourselfers, this is a real growth stage, as it seems you need to learn to allow something bigger than you are to take over and make things happen FOR you.

Okay, I'm focusing on Believing what I Ask for, and daydreaming about my fabulous New Job! So excited.

Ask: My New Job

I am so excited to start my new job in January 2010!

At my new job:
  • I LIKE going to my job!
  • I wake up happy to go do my work and feel excited about what I can accomplish each day.
  • Sometimes during the day, I think to myself, "Wow, this is my job...I am SO lucky!"
  • My job allows me to have a continuum of contentment, moving from work, into home time, and into weekends. They are all equally enjoyable and satisfying.
  • When I come home from work, I feel happy and contented, and have plenty of energy for home and family activities.
  • My job allows me to maintain my current lifestyle financially, for as long as we choose, and to also add travel to our lives.
  • I use my innate talents, learned skills, education, and experience on a daily basis.
  • I am considered the in-house expert in what I do, and have autonomy in carrying out my work.
  • I'm responsible only for myself and my part of our work process, and am very successful in carrying it out.
  • I work with friendly and kind people; we all treat one another with respect and cheerfulness on a daily basis.
  • Our work environment is fresh, fun, peaceful, and cheerful.
  • My job is FUN!!

First Goal: New Job in the New Year

My job has been something I'd like to change for a long time now.

I was actually seeing a therapist to help me manage my emotions related to my job, and I ended up connecting with a really cool person. She told me about so many unusual resources that might help me. One of those resources was a video called "The Secret."

One of my employees had once told me about a book by this same name, but I hadn't given it any serious thought or really even looked at the book. But, when the therapist mentioned that it was available as a DVD through Netflix, I jumped right on it.

I added "The Secret" to the top of my Netflix queue and it came straight away. I watched it that night, and LOVED it. I've studied similar topics and ideas for many years, so definitely have awareness of and faith in the principles behind them. The nice thing about "The Secret" is that it narrows your focus to just one topic - the Law of Attraction.

I took so many notes that first night, and thought of so many things I'd like to re-direct in my life. At the top of my list was my job. The three step process I learned from the video is:

  1. Ask
  2. Believe
  3. Receive

So, I began with Ask. I wrote as much as I knew about what I am looking for in a new job, and am now in the Believe stage. I am so eager to Receive. In my next post, I'll describe everything I know about what I want in my new job/career.
